Mathaithai Football Club was founded in 2009 by their club chairman, Sipho Gxilisha and other stakeholders. The football club, formed in the township of Botshabelo in Bloemfontein in the Free State province and was established with a vision to uplift the local community through football.
The club’s vision has been an eye on reaching the highest level of football in the South African footballing space and providing a professional football team in the province which gives a platform to talented players locally.
Over many years, Mathaithai FC has participated in the lower leagues of South African football including the ABC Motsepe League in the Free State stream where they have faced several challenges such as financial issues. However, the club has proved its resilience through many strong performances in recent years, as well as securing important sponsorship deals which the club has received over the years.
In the 2022/2023 season, the football club achieved arguably its highest point till date, where the Botshabelo-based side managed to reach the Nedbank Cup last 16, facing one of the powerhouses of South African football, Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club.
Since then, the club continues to play in the country’s third tier league which is the ABC Motsepe League in the Free State provincial stream.
